Four-Year-Old Already an Experienced Skateboarder

Aired September 12, 2000 - 1:58 p.m. ET

THIS IS A RUSH TRANSCRIPT. THIS COPY MAY NOT BE IN ITS FINAL FORM AND MAY BE UPDATED.

NATALIE ALLEN, CNN ANCHOR: A lot of kids grow up to follow in their parents' footsteps. A boy in California, actually, is following in his dad's wheel tracks.

LOU WATERS, CNN ANCHOR: He is. He's got skill, he's got balance, he's got the moves. Not bad for a pre-schooler.

And Hal Clement, from CNN affiliate KGTV in San Diego, has the story.

(BEGIN VIDEOTAPE)

HAL CLEMENT, KGTV REPORTER (voice-over): Drop by your local skateboard park, you see a lot of people involved in the sports -- you just don't see many like Shey Saladino.

Shey, you see, just turned 4-years-old and is already a veteran skateboarder. he started very young.

SHEY SALADINO: Eighteen months.

CLEMENT: You were 18-months old when you started?

Shey is the strong silent type. A man of action, not words -- but he can ride that skateboard.

DOUG SALADINO: He has to go everywhere with the skateboard. Everywhere. He doesn't want to leave home without it.

CLEMENT: Shey comes by his talent naturally.

Dad, Doug, is a long-time pro skateboarder known by the nickname "pineapple."

CLEMENT (on camera): Now, Shey would really love to skate here in the big skate park, but he's not old enough. You have to be six.

Shey has to be content with the kids' area where he can go forever: the Energizer Bunny of skateboarding.

D. SALADINO: He'll wear me out. He'll wear me out. I'll bring him here on the weekends and he'll just want to skate for hours at a time.

CLEMENT (voice-over): Curbs: no problem. Control: no problem.

This is not to say that Shey is perfect; skateboarding has its ups and downs after all, but he has all the protective gear, you'll notice and, most importantly, he loves it.

D. SALADINO: He's having a great time and I enjoy watching him. Him and I are buddies. We hang out, we go to the skate park together, we go to the beach together.

CLEMENT: Whether Shey will follow in dad's footsteps and become a pro skateboarder, who knows, because he has other interests. He also snowboards and, for his birthday last week, he got a set of drums.
