Cruise Ship Rembrandt Seized

Aired September 14, 2000 - 2:50 p.m. ET

THIS IS A RUSH TRANSCRIPT. THIS COPY MAY NOT BE IN ITS FINAL FORM AND MAY BE UPDATED.

NATALIE ALLEN, CNN ANCHOR: Well here is a story we are just learning about. How would you like to be in a cruise, and all of a sudden, the ship that you are on cruising is seized? That has apparently happened in Halifax, Nova Scotia, on the cruise shop Rembrandt, which belongs to Premier Cruises, hundreds of Americans on board.

This cruise ship originated in New York. Let's find out what has happened and what is happening to these folks' cruise as a result from Hance Colburne. He is a reporter for Global News. He joins us now Halifax.

Hance, what is going on?

HANCE COLBURNE, GLOBAL NEWS: Last night, the Rembrandt was making its trip to Quebec, Natalie. Its scheduled stop at about 11:00 p.m., the captain came on over the PA, and said that they would be returning to Halifax because the ship had been seized. And once they returned here, there has been a bit of confusion as to exactly how they are getting home.

The harbor master of the Halifax Harbor has been told that they would stay overnight on a couple of Premier Line cruise ships, both the Big Red Boat II, which is docked here on Halifax, and also one that is making its way up, which is the Seabreeze.

Now we have learned from some sources that the Seabreeze has also been seized when it gets here to Halifax.

Now passengers have been told that they are actually heading back down to New York on the Big Red Boat II. So pretty unclear exactly how they are getting home.

ALLEN: Well, these poor people were looking at pictures of their luggage just sitting there. What is the problem with this cruise ship line?

COLBURNE: That is the question, Natalie. Passenger really don't know exactly what is happening. Their luggage and mattresses have been removed from the Rembrandt, and being taken over to the Big Red Boat II.

Apparently they are going to be sleeping in hallways and perhaps even on deck if they do take the Big Red Boat II back down to New York.

ALLEN: Have you talked with any of these people? gotten reaction?

COLBURNE: Yes, yes, definitely have. Some people are quite irate, as you can image, quite upset about the lack of information, the treatment. Some are really just taking it in stride, and they are having a good time with it.

So it is a mixed reaction today here in Halifax.

ALLEN: OK, well, good for those folks that can laugh about this. I say hats off. They are really vacationing. It sounds like a nightmare, and we will continue to follow it and see if we can find out why a cruise ship in mid-cruise would be seized.
