New NHTSA Report Adds to Firestone Tire-Related Fatalities

Aired September 19, 2000 - 6:10 p.m. ET

THIS IS A RUSH TRANSCRIPT. THIS COPY MAY NOT BE IN ITS FINAL FORM AND MAY BE UPDATED.

BERNARD SHAW, CNN ANCHOR: CNN's Carl Rochelle is here with some new developments on the recall of the Firestone tire story -- Carl.

CARL ROCHELLE, CNN CORRESPONDENT: Bernie, the latest figures out from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration. They've been tracking the number of deaths involved in Ford vehicles -- Ford Explorer vehicles equipped with Firestone tires; and those latest figures, just out, show, according to NHTSA, the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, 2,226 total complaints, over 400 injuries and 103 fatalities.

Now, this is an update of figures from August 31 when they last put the figures out. It indicates an additional 15 deaths reported from accidents involving Ford Explorer vehicles equipped with the Firestone tires, which are, Bernie, as you know, involved in a major recall, investigation, congressional hearings and so forth and so on.

But the actual figures -- these figures, and they are just out from NHTSA, 2,226 complaints, over 400 injuries and a total of 103 fatalities of people involved who were driving Ford Explorer vehicles equipped with those Firestone tires that are involved in that recall.

SHAW: OK, thank you, Carl Rochelle.
