LOU WATERS, CNN ANCHOR: Now to Boston, where Celtics star Paul Pierce is in the hospital, the victim of a multiple stabbing. Police say it happened early this morning at a nightclub. No one's been arrested yet.

Here's the latest from our Boston bureau chief, Bill Delaney.

(BEGIN VIDEOTAPE)

BILL DELANEY, CNN BOSTON BUREAU CHIEF (voice-over): For Boston Celtics star forward Paul pierce, luck came in very unlucky circumstances. "Lucky to be alive," a hospital source was quoted as saying after what was described as an altercation in a downtown Boston nightclub at around 1:00 in the morning Monday left Pierce with at least five stab wounds in the face, neck, back.

MARY ELLEN BURNS, BOSTON POLICE: The victim was attending a private party being held at this location. According to witnesses, the stabbing took place in the pool room located in the rear of the nightclub. The victim was at the Buzz Club with several friends at the time of the stabbing.

DELANEY: Friends who drove the 24-year-old, 6'9", 220-pound Pierce to a nearby hospital. Pierce was able to walk in, undergoing surgery early Monday, listed then in fair condition.

UNIDENTIFIED MALE: It's sad news that you don't want to hear, you know. And to tell the truth, I'm glad he's just alive.

DELANEY: Police say they have leads, though no arrest is imminent.

BURNS: We do have some statements made by some of the people who were in the nightclub that some members of a local music group, a rap group, may have been involved in this. We are investigating that.

DELANEY: Pierce averaged 19.5 points for the Celtics last season, ranking second in the NBA in steals.

(on camera): Pierce came to the NBA in the 1998 draft after finishing his junior year at the University of Kansas. His major there had been crime and delinquency studies.
