Bush Speaks at Rally in Melbourne, Florida

Aired October 7, 2000 - 12:11 p.m. ET

THIS IS A RUSH TRANSCRIPT. THIS COPY MAY NOT BE IN ITS FINAL FORM AND MAY BE UPDATED.

GENE RANDALL, CNN ANCHOR: In campaign 2000, Republican presidential candidate George W. Bush, the governor of Texas, is in Florida, a real battleground state, for an appearance. This is Melbourne, Florida.

Let's listen in.

GOV. GEORGE W. BUSH (R-TX), PRESIDENTIAL CANDIDATE: I don't believe the strength of our country lies in the halls of government in Washington. I believe the strength of America lies in the hearts and souls of our citizens. I trust you.

I trust you, and I want you to -- I want to share with you some of our positions. First, we want government to stand on the side of our families. We want government to reinforce values, not contradict values.

We want our children...

(APPLAUSE)

We want our children to learn to make the right choices in life.

Today on the stage are the Knalls (ph) family from this part of the world. They run an after-school program based upon faith and charity and compassion. In order to make sure our children know more about reading and write and adding and subtracting, what I want to do is encourage faith-based and community-based programs, to become involved in after-school programs.

RANDALL: Republican presidential candidate George W. Bush campaigning in Melbourne, Florida, a battleground state. Vice President Al Gore will be in the state tomorrow.
