Violence Erupts Between Palestinians, Israelis in West BankAired October 9, 2000 - 7:10 a.m. ET
THIS IS A RUSH TRANSCRIPT. THIS COPY MAY NOT BE IN ITS FINAL FORM AND MAY BE UPDATED.
CAROL LIN, CNN ANCHOR: All right, right now we're going to go back to the Middle East, where we've got some breaking news out of the West Bank area in Israel.
CNN's correspondent Ben Wedeman standing by.
Ben, what have you seen?
BEN WEDEMAN, CNN CORRESPONDENT: Yes, Carol, I'm seeing a very large clash here on the northern end of Ramallah in the West Bank. About 45 minutes ago, a large group of Palestinian youths started heading north out of the city where they were confronted by several Israeli army jeeps.
For the past 25 minutes, they've been engaged in a very intense stone battle against the Israelis, who are responding with rubber- coated steel bullets, concussion grenades and tear gas. It is very tense here and emotions are running very high; certainly, after the discovery, last night, of a body of a Palestinian who apparently was killed and his body was, then, burned.
So people here are very, very emotional at the moment.
LIN: Ben, were you in a position to see how it started? Who started it?
The Israelis are saying that they would only respond to violence, not initiate any.
WEDEMAN: Well, it appears, in this case -- as often is the case -- demonstrators will approach the Israeli position in a confrontational manner, throwing rocks, shouting, cursing at the Israelis. The Israelis will, then, move forward, stop the Palestinians and then push them back using rubber bullets and this tear gas.
LIN: All right; thank you very much, Ben Wedeman with the very latest news out of the West Bank in Israel.
