Gov. George W. Bush Delivers Remarks on Middle East Violence

Aired October 13, 2000 - 1:47 p.m. ET

THIS IS A RUSH TRANSCRIPT. THIS COPY MAY NOT BE IN ITS FINAL FORM AND MAY BE UPDATED.

NATALIE ALLEN, CNN ANCHOR: We want to take you now live to Pontiac, Michigan. George W. Bush is making a campaign stop there, talking with people at a GM plant. We are going to listen in for a few moments.

(JOINED IN PROGRESS):

GOV. GEORGE W. BUSH (R-TX), PRESIDENTIAL CANDIDATE: I continue to be concerned and troubled by the violence in the Middle East. The picture of that young man with blood on his hands celebrating the death of an Israeli soldier, that kind of action must be condemned.

It's important for our administration to continue to seek calm and peace in the Middle East. It's important for Chairman Arafat to ask the Palestinians to step back, so that peace can take hold.

I want to thank you all for coming. I'm so pleased to be joined by my wife. I think you can judge...

(APPLAUSE)

I think you can judge the nature of a man by the company he keeps.

(LAUGHTER)

I keep really good company.

I'm also honored to be here with governor friends of mine, Gov. Bob Taft of Ohio and Gov. Don Sundquist of Tennessee...

ALLEN: That was a brief comment from George W. Bush condemning the picture he saw in the newspaper today. It was on the cover of the "New York Times" regarding the killing of the Israeli soldiers yesterday in Ramallah.

We also have a comment from Al Gore, who was on the campaign trail talking about what has happened in the past day in the Middle East.

Here is the vice president.

(BEGIN VIDEO CLIP) VICE PRES. AL GORE (D), PRESIDENTIAL CANDIDATE: This is a time of great tension in the Middle East. And it is a time when our country's leadership is needed and we're going to, as a nation, we're going to stand together and doing everything we can to, to promote peace with security, and the right outcome.

(END VIDEO CLIP)

ALLEN: And we'll have more on this story right after this.
