George W. Bush Holds Rally in Eau Clair, Wisconsin

Aired October 18, 2000 - 1:49 p.m. ET

THIS IS A RUSH TRANSCRIPT. THIS COPY MAY NOT BE IN ITS FINAL FORM AND MAY BE UPDATED.

LOU WATERS, CNN ANCHOR: We are going to take you to Eau Clair, Wisconsin, where George W. Bush is at a rally, speaking of the sailors aboard the USS Cole.

(JOINED IN PROGRESS)

GOV. GEORGE W. BUSH (R), PRESIDENTIAL CANDIDATE: This is a commitment shared by all Americans. We wish the president every success in the advance of peace and the pursuit of justice. And we pray that every soul touched by this tragedy will find a measure of God's peace.

Thank you very much.

(APPLAUSE)

I wished my wife were here.

(APPLAUSE)

See I think you can judge the nature of a man by the company he keeps.

(APPLAUSE)

I keep really good company on a daily basis, and that my wife isn't here, I am keeping pretty darn good company with your governor, I might add. I am proud to call him friend.

(APPLAUSE)

I am proud to call this man friend.

(APPLAUSE)

I know you are proud to call him governor. He's done a heck of a job. he really has. You know what Washington needs, it needs this kind of -- the Tommy Thompson sense up there, people that speak plain, people that don't try to be all things to all people, people who don't take polls and focus groups to tell you what to think. America needs somebody who is steady and strong.

(APPLAUSE) I appreciate Tommy. That's the kind of leadership we are going to give them. Exactly the kind of leadership we are going to give them. Before I got going, I mentioned this in the debate last night, decided to put my hat in the ring. I had to answer two questions, and one of them had to with my family. And the first question was: Was our love strong enough to endure this business? And now, with a little less than three weeks to go, I can report you bet, you bet.

WATERS: George W. Bush, coming off last night's final encounter against Al Gore in the presidential debates, appearing relaxed and at home in Eau Claire, Wisconsin, where he says you need someone steady and strong in Washington. And he also reminded voters there's only three weeks to go.
