Bush Participates in Michigan Voters Forum

Aired October 19, 2000 - 9:25 a.m. ET

THIS IS A RUSH TRANSCRIPT. THIS COPY MAY NOT BE IN ITS FINAL FORM AND MAY BE UPDATED.

BILL HEMMER, CNN ANCHOR: Live to Fraser, Michigan now, just north of Detroit, Texas Governor George Bush back on the stump this morning.

(JOINED IN PROGRESS)

GOV. GEORGE W. BUSH (R), PRESIDENTIAL CANDIDATE: He was talking about the future of the automobile industry. And if anybody who understands the future of the automobile industry, it's Mr. Iacocca, I'm proud to have his support.

(APPLAUSE)

Today I want to discuss my agenda for younger Americans. It's what I call the rising generation. And I'm so glad to be here with so many in that generation, people just beginning careers and families, a generation that has already begun to leave its mark. And I see it in the promise of either greater achievement.

But you deserve a government for the 21st century, a government that reflects your values, your entrepreneurial spirit, your trust in individual choice and initiative, your faith in community, and your commitment to leaving behind a better world than the one you inherited.

I believe that my agenda offers real reform to give the rising generation real control over their futures. This is a moment of great promise; a time of emerging technologies and entrepreneurial spirit.

Our new economy creating high-wage jobs. It is energizing industries far beyond the Silicon Valley banking and auto production and agriculture. Information technology has embedded itself in every nook and cranny of the economy, satellite navigation systems that guide cars and trucks made right here in Michigan.

Telemedicine is bringing world-class health care to rural communities in states like Iowa. Americans from every background and newly arrived immigrants find that they can advance in the new economy through their hard work and determination based on knowledge and merit.

HEMMER: Texas Governor George Bush speaking what he says is his message to younger Americans, a generation that he calls quote, "the rising generation," saying that he has an agenda of real reform. All this going on while the polls continue to show a very, very tight race. Less than three month to go.
