THIS IS A RUSH TRANSCRIPT. THIS COPY MAY NOT BE IN ITS FINAL FORM AND MAY BE UPDATED.
LOU WATERS, CNN ANCHOR: Two men who were shipwrecked for 13 days off the coast of Mexico have been rescued. The third man, however, did not survive.
We get more from Steve Fiorina (ph) of our San Diego affiliate KGTV.
STEVE FIORINA, KGTV REPORTER (voice-over): Flat on his back and just served a tray of hospital food, Joel Rangel couldn't be happier.
JOE RANGEL, SURVIVOR: It's fantastic. It's great to be home.
FIORINA: He and a friend had gone fishing with a guide in a situation much like this one: They left on a mothership from San Felipe, then set off on a small boat and got lost.
(on camera): There was a storm; strong winds. The men were in a 21-food ponga like this one. They ran out of gas and beached themselves, hoping to be quickly rescued.
(voice-over): They were off the coast of Bajia de Los Angeles on a large island called Isla Angel de la Guarda. Very large, but no food. Just what they had on the boat.
RANGEL: We had three 15-ounce bottles of water, a Dr Pepper and three beers for three people.
FIORINA: It was share and share alike.
RANGEL: The three of us, we shared the same meal, we shared the same water. If we had a crab, all three of us ate crab. Sea snail, same thing, we shared them. Water, we shared it. It was all equal.
FIORINA: But his friend became weak and died. Joe focused his thoughts on his 6-month-old grandson; and listened to his guide, Pepe.
RANGEL: Allagro (ph) says to him -- was the guide. You know, he just kept yammering about, you got to have faith, you got to have faith; you got have faith in the Lord that we're going to get through this.
UNIDENTIFIED FEMALE: Fishermen of San Felipe just hunted and hunted and hunted. At one time, I think they were told that they had like 5,000 boats hunting for him.
FIORINA: She thought he was lost forever; then came word of the rescue.
UNIDENTIFIED FEMALE: I was ecstatic. I was very happy. And he is stubborn; that probably played a big part in it.
FIORINA: That can help when you're marooned for 13 days.
