Subway Series: Coffee, Eggs Served Up With Side of Baseball at New York Diner

Aired October 25, 2000 - 2:48 p.m. ET

THIS IS A RUSH TRANSCRIPT. THIS COPY MAY NOT BE IN ITS FINAL FORM AND MAY BE UPDATED.

LOU WATERS, CNN ANCHOR: We've gotten a taste of the rivalry among fans in the stands at this year's Subway World Series, but how about down at the office. How do Mets and Yankee fans handle working side-by-side day in and day out?

Well, CNN's Deborah Feyerick gets a taste of the team spirit at a New York diner.

(BEGIN VIDEOTAPE)

DEBORAH FEYERICK, CNN CORRESPONDENT (voice-over): The sun rises on the Seven Seas Diner in Great Neck, Long Island, and coffee and eggs are served up with a side order of baseball.

JANICE GONZALEZ, WAITRESS: Well, if he hit him he knew he was going to be thrown out from the World Series.

JOANNA SIAFAKAS, WAITRESS: Yes, but let's not emphasize on the Clemens, let's emphasize on the series.

UNIDENTIFIED MALE: There we go, there we go. Girl after my own heart.

GONZALEZ: You belong together. You really belong together. No more coffee for this man. Cut him off.

FEYERICK: Waitress Janice Gonzalez is a Mets fan. Joanna Siafakas is rooting for the Yankees.

GONZALEZ: A lot of customers tell me they don't want me to wait on them because I'm a Mets fan.

FEYERICK (on camera): So, what, are you giving up the tips for the week, or what are you doing?

GONZALEZ: No, share because we have no problem.

SIAFAKAS: Oh, no. We share because she can't wait on everybody. I only get half the money anyway.

FEYERICK (voice-over): During the day, Yankees fans are in the majority here. At night, it's the Mets who rule.

UNIDENTIFIED MALE: Hey, how about that. Here we are. Thank you very much.

GONZALEZ: Excuse me, excuse me.

FEYERICK: Some diners keep a low profile.

UNIDENTIFIED FEMALE: I'm strictly a figure skating fan and ballet fan.

FEYERICK: Others are caught up in the heat of the series.

(on camera): Who serves the better coffee?

UNIDENTIFIED MALE: Mets.

UNIDENTIFIED FEMALE: Yankees!

UNIDENTIFIED MALE: Yankees.

FEYERICK (voice-over): As for tipping...

UNIDENTIFIED MALE: It's very delicate to say, but as far as I'm a Yankee fan, I believe Yankees are the best tippers.

FEYERICK: The Yankees are a richer team, after all. If they lose, Joanna's buying lunch for everyone, which doesn't bother Janice, whose got a not-so-secret secret.

GONZALEZ: That's the most important thing. The boss is a Mets fan and he's sitting right there.

FEYERICK (on camera): And you're sure you're really a Mets fan then?

GONZALEZ: Die hard.

(LAUGHTER)

Die hard.

SIAFAKAS: And it's not because of the...

FEYERICK: You're not trying to get a promotion, are you?

GONZALEZ: No.

SIAFAKAS: You can't get a promotion as a waitress.

FEYERICK (voice-over): Maybe, maybe not, but you can serve a lot of coffee trying.

Deborah Feyerick, CNN, Great Neck, New York.

(END VIDEOTAPE)

NATALIE ALLEN, CNN ANCHOR: They're having a good time, aren't they. WATERS: Well, they're having fun with it.

ALLEN: Yes it is.

WATERS: Yes they are.
