Float-Making Company Prepares for World Series Parade

Aired October 26, 2000 - 2:55 p.m. ET

THIS IS A RUSH TRANSCRIPT. THIS COPY MAY NOT BE IN ITS FINAL FORM AND MAY BE UPDATED.

LOU WATERS, CNN ANCHOR: It was Yankee Yogi Berra who said "It ain't over until it's over." But we know about what it's going to be when it's over.

NATALIE ALLEN, CNN ANCHOR: You should have stopped.

(LAUGHTER)

WATERS: Figure that one out!

ALLEN: All right, but some folks think it's already over, apparently, and Gary Tuchman has that for you.

(BEGIN VIDEOTAPE)

GARY TUCHMAN, CNN NATIONAL CORRESPONDENT (voice-over): Inside a nondescript building in New Jersey they're preparing for one of the biggest parties of the year in New York city.

ROBERT DEVITO, BOND PARADE FLOATS: This is the ultimate parade for us, is a sports parade.

TUCHMAN: Because two New York teams are in the World Series, New York knows it's going to have a ticker-tape parade.

And Rob DeVito's company has the contract to build the floats.

DEVITO: Right now I'm not getting too much Mets stuff ready because the Yankees are up three-one, they won 15 out of the last 16 World Series games. I can't see the Mets taking them three straight.

TUCHMAN (on camera): How long have you been doing this for?

UNIDENTIFIED MALE: A long time, I've been doing this.

TUCHMAN (voice-over): So employees here are primarily concentrating on Yankee arts and crafts right now.

But if the Mets tie the series three to three and it goes to game seven:

DEVITO: I'll immediately start Met logos. I wouldn't wait until after game seven to do it. TUCHMAN: This company has provided the floats for the last Yankee victory parades in 1996, '98 and '99, and also does many other parades in New York city.

DEVITO: The Columbus Day parade, the Puerto Rican Day Parade, the Salute to Israel Parade, the German Parade, Polish, Korean, Indian, Pakistani.

TUCHMAN: But it's a World Series parade that's tops in Rob DeVito's book; and as a Yankee fan, that's who he's rooting for.

So if they win, what happens to his Met preparation?

DEVITO: I save it. You know, the Mets have a good team, they're going to be back again next year if they don't win it this year.

TUCHMAN (on camera): So you'll hang onto it and hope for a World Series next year, maybe?

DEVITO: Of course. Going to save everything.

TUCHMAN: Unless the Yankees win it next year?

DEVITO: That would be better yet.

TUCHMAN: Most of the employees here are Yankee fans. But business is business; so, if the Mets win, they'll watch their floats in the parade with great pride and profit.

Gary Tuchman, CNN, Clifton, New Jersey.
