Fatalities Reported in Singapore Airlines Crash

Aired October 31, 2000 - 4:26 p.m. ET

THIS IS A RUSH TRANSCRIPT. THIS COPY MAY NOT BE IN ITS FINAL FORM AND MAY BE UPDATED.

NATALIE ALLEN, CNN ANCHOR: And we go straight now live to Los Angeles. Singapore Airlines is giving the latest on the plane crash in Taiwan.

(JOINED IN PROGRESS)

JAMES BOYD, SINGAPORE AIRLINES: ...efforts are ongoing. The information that we received is the latest information as the time that we provided to you. There will be updates to this information. So please view this information as the latest that we have received.

Of the 159 passengers and 20 crew on board of SQ Flight 006, some fatalities have now been reported. The specific number of casualties and fatalities has yet to be confirmed. Please do keep in mind that the rescue operation is still under way. However, we understand there were 75 passengers who are unaccounted for, 68 passengers total who are injured, and 16 passengers who are now confirmed at this moment as being uninjured.

Of the crew, three -- the three technical crew are uninjured. Eight cabin crew are reported as unaccounted for. One is injured, and eight are reported as being unhurt. The injured have been transferred to hospitals in Taipei. And once again, rescue operations are still under way. This is an evolving situation. We expect to have updated numbers for you very shortly.

On board, once again, there were five first-class passengers, 28 business-class passengers, and 126 economy-class passengers. The three technical crew were comprised of the flight commander and two Singaporean first officers. Of the 17 crew, 15 are reported as being Singaporean. Two are Taiwanese. This is the first incident -- the first serious incident involving an SIA aircraft. The 747-400 aircraft was manufactured by Boeing in January of 1997.

It was purchased from the manufacturer as a new aircraft at that time. It underwent its last maintenance check on the 16th of December -- of September, excuse me -- of the year 2000, this current year. The aircraft which carries the registration of 9DSPK carried no defects. To reiterate: Singapore Airlines Flight 06 crashed on the runway during takeoff during -- early on October 31st at 23:18 hours local time in Taipei's Chiang Kai-shek Airport.

There will be another update of information that we receive from Singapore within about the next hour. I believe you already have the contact information number that passengers -- that families should use of passengers. Once again, as additional information becomes available, we will be passing that on to you. Thank you.

ALLEN: All right, James Boyd from Singapore Airlines bringing us the latest, talking with us this afternoon about the air disaster that happened on takeoff at Taiwan's airport -- this time Mr. Boyd saying only that 75 people on board that airline are unaccounted for. Earlier, we had heard 49 dead. As she said, the rescue continues. The weather has been very poor in that area. And we'll continue to follow the story and bring you developments as we get them.
