Special Event

Bush Holds Campaign Rally in Chattanooga, Tennessee

Aired November 6, 2000 - 10:28 a.m. ET

THIS IS A RUSH TRANSCRIPT. THIS COPY MAY NOT BE IN ITS FINAL FORM AND MAY BE UPDATED.

BILL HEMMER, CNN ANCHOR: Here is the Texas governor on the stump again live in Tennessee.

(JOINED IN PROGRESS)

GOV. GEORGE W. BUSH (R), PRESIDENTIAL CANDIDATE: Here's our advice to the members of the United States Congress, people who are yearning for leadership, my advice is this: Be patient, help is on the way.

(APPLAUSE)

In one day, help is on the way.

(APPLAUSE)

AUDIENCE: One more day. One more day. One more day.

BUSH: I'm so glad to be on the stage with people who have served the state of Tennessee with distinction: Lamar Alexander and Howard Baker and Winfield Dunn, people who showed that politics doesn't have to be an arena of finger-pointing and angry people and name-calling. I'm so proud that Nancy Coverdell from Georgia has joined us here, along with the next United States Senator, Mack Mattingly.

(APPLAUSE)

I also want to thank Loretta Lynn, Billy Ray Cyrus, Lee Greenwood and my friend, Michael W. Smith.

(APPLAUSE)

Michael, I want to tell you, yesterday I had breakfast with our mutual friend, the great Billy Graham.

(APPLAUSE)

I know you heard his -- you were in Jacksonville last night, so I'm especially grateful for you to get up early in the morning and come down here, but you should, you're a young guy.

(LAUGHTER)

Now, we're coming down the stretch, folks. We're coming down the stretch. I feel so optimistic.

(APPLAUSE)

I like what I feel.

(APPLAUSE)

I like what I feel, but we can take nothing for granted. We've got to make sure we work hard to turnout that vote. And while you're turning out the vote, make sure you talk to open-minded Democrats and independents, because like us, they understand -- they understand that there's a better day ahead if we have a leader who's willing to unite the country to bring people together...

(APPLAUSE)

... to elevate the people's business above everyday politics.

And don't be afraid to talk about the issues with them, as well. We stand on the side of the people. We stand squarely side-by-side with the people of Tennessee and Georgia, because we trust the people.

We feel differently about government than my opponent does. He thinks the wisdom exists in Washington, D.C. He forgot his roots. He forgot where he's from. He trusts Washington, we trust the people.

HEMMER: From Chattanooga, Tennessee right now. A bit later he will move onto Wisconsin, then Iowa, and eventually Arkansas, then back to his home state of Tennessee.
