Comdex Show in Las Vegas Showcases Latest Video and Computer Technology

Aired November 15, 2000 - 2:53 p.m. ET

THIS IS A RUSH TRANSCRIPT. THIS COPY MAY NOT BE IN ITS FINAL FORM AND MAY BE UPDATED.

LOU WATERS, CNN ANCHOR: It's not all politics today. We have a little fun for ourselves now from Las Vegas, where one of the nation's largest trade shows, called Comdex is going on.

NATALIE ALLEN, CNN ANCHOR: Yes, we'd like to pause for just a moment...

WATERS: And take a deep breath.

ALLEN: And do something else. Ed Curran is there, playing with all the newest gadgets. In fact, he's so immersed he probably doesn't even know the election is still going on out here.

WATERS: Maybe not.

ALLEN: Hi, there, Ed.

ED CURRAN, "TECHNOGADGET GUY": What election is that? I'll tell you, this is marvelous out here. A million square feet of products and here I am with only one credit card. That is just terrible.

Let me show you some of the wonderful items that are here. First of all, digital photo taking is so popular and this is a digital photo printer from Olympus. This uses disublimation to make prints of incredible quality. Photographs that look like photographs. Photographs that wear like regular photographs. It takes you about a minute and a half to make a photograph. The price of this unit -- $600. It'll be out soon from Olympus. A great way to print your digital photos.

Here is a great solution for people who have the pocket PC. This is the Ipaq, compact pocket PC. And in it, we have a wireless modem card that slides right in here. We're on the Internet wirelessly, but rather than just clipping information and downloading stock, we're actually able to browse and see graphics. We're looking at the career section of cnn.com and you see everything here. Also, you can go in and check your corporate e-mail. Go through your fire wall and check that. Amazing. This goes for about $450 with everything you need.

Now here's a Bluetooth solution for wireless. This connects in close proximity, so this is looking at a computer wirelessly that's about 75 feet away from me, using that computer to access cnn.com on the Internet. And it just uses a card like this from Digianswer that sells for a couple of hundred dollars. Together with the special pack you need for your Compaq Ipaq PC, it'll cost you about $350 to go Bluetooth and be wirelessly connected to your laptop within a certain close proximity distance.

Now here's a great camcorder from Sony that came out at the show here. This is a camcorder that operates digitally. It records on little, mini-DV cassettes like this but also can take still photos and store them on a memory stick card. Now the great thing about this is that you can also make a movie, convert it into MPEG, attach it to e- mail and send it to anybody you want to. And it does it automatically inside the camera.

Finally, here's a product I absolutely love, from Telemann. This is a HDTV card for your computer. You're able to put this into your computer and receive High Definition Television broadcast for $400. Telemann makes this very exciting product and if you really want to see great HDTV, you can use your computer monitor, but you ought to get one that looks like this is from Samsung. It is taking the HDTV recorded from that card on the hard disk and playing it back high definition: $7,000 for this particular unit from Samsung. Twenty- four inches across, the first computer monitor to deliver a high- definition television image.

And so fan fantastic products here at Comdex, which goes through the end of the week here in Las Vegas.

ALLEN: OK, Ed, fascinating. We thought you were going to do something less confusing than the Florida election. We can't keep up any with any of, can we, Lou?

WATERS: And do us a favor, Ed. Don't send us any of your home movies, all right?

ALLEN: Thanks, Ed.
