Crisis in the Middle East: Explosion Hits Bus in Israel; Barak Holds Palestinian Authority Responsible

Aired November 22, 2000 - 11:55 a.m. ET

THIS IS A RUSH TRANSCRIPT. THIS COPY MAY NOT BE IN ITS FINAL FORM AND MAY BE UPDATED.

LEON HARRIS, CNN ANCHOR: We've got some other news coming, some breaking news that we've been following this morning: word we got, moments ago, about an explosion that rocked a bus in Israel. And we are now, just now, getting these first set of pictures in. I'm advising you that we have not really screened these photos, we are just getting them in. They are coming into the CNN Center even as we speak right now.

Hard to tell exactly what is going on here. As you can see, it is night.

The town where this explosion occurred in is Hadera, which is in the northern part of Israel. You can see there emergency workers attending to what looks like just one person there. We understand that this bus contained a number of people.

An explosion -- we believe it was a car, it is believed to be something that was in a car -- and it resulted in at least two fatalities, we understand, a number of people hurt, up to 25, we understand.

And as we have just heard moments ago, reported by CNN's Jerusalem bureau chief Mike Hanna, Israeli Prime Minister Ehud Barak has come out and has condemned this action and has said that he is holding the Palestinian Authority responsible, as they have -- they were responsible for the release of a number of terrorists, as he says, from prison, some time ago, and he, therefore, holds any action like this as the responsibility of the Palestinian Authority.

We are still keeping an eye out for any other retaliation that may come from this, or other development in Israel. But again, you are looking now at pictures that are coming -- and these are not live pictures; this is videotape that was shot just moments ago -- and it is just now coming into the CNN center.

We will keep our eye on that story as it develops throughout the morning.
