CNN 20: Commuter Train Shooting, December 7, 1993

Aired December 7, 2000 - 6:13 p.m. ET

THIS IS A RUSH TRANSCRIPT. THIS COPY MAY NOT BE IN ITS FINAL FORM AND MAY BE UPDATED.

(BEGIN VIDEOTAPE)

GARY TUCHMAN, CNN CORRESPONDENT: It was on December 7th. We raced out to the scene in Long Island. The train was just stopped on the tracks, and we could see through the windows blood.

It turns out it was a man who in his pockets had hand-written notes expressing his dislike for whites and Asians, and he went on a shooting rampage on the train. Killed six people, wounded 17.

During his trial, he decided he wanted to argue his case himself, and they say that someone who represents himself has a fool for a client.

(BEGIN VIDEO CLIP)

COLIN FERGUSON: Detective Hoffman (ph), where was that found?

(END VIDEO CLIP)

BRIAN JENKINS, FORMER CNN CORRESPONDENT: I remember seeing him at a pretrial hearing, and it was apparent that he was mentally disturbed, but quite lucid and articulate and obviously well-educated.

(BEGIN VIDEO CLIP)

FERGUSON: Judge, I object to this (UNINTELLIGIBLE) of the witness.

(END VIDEO CLIP)

JENKINS: I sat and watched Colin Ferguson give his opening statement referring to himself in the third person. He understood the process. It was just the content of what he was saying that was so distorted.

He is in prison, and he truly believed that he had been framed.

(END VIDEOTAPE)
