Florida House Votes to Approve Bush Electors

Aired December 12, 2000 - 3:34 p.m. ET

THIS IS A RUSH TRANSCRIPT. THIS COPY MAY NOT BE IN ITS FINAL FORM AND MAY BE UPDATED.

STATE REP. TOM FEENEY (R), FLORIDA HOUSE SPEAKER: Some cases were made in speeches from our new members. But all the speeches, in my view, were conducted with remarkably civility, a lack of redundancy.

BOBBIE BATTISTA, "TALKBACK LIVE": You are looking at a live picture of the Florida legislature, where the House is in session.

Let's go to CNN's Mike Boettcher down there, where apparently there is some breaking news -- Mike.

MIKE BOETTCHER, CNN CORRESPONDENT: Well, Bobbie, the House just voted 79-41 to name its own slate of electors. This came after 5 1/2 hours of debate. Let's listen into Speaker Tom Feeney. The vote just occurred a minute ago. And he is thanking the members and reflecting on this historic debate.

FEENEY: I think we did so by having a great debate about the Constitution, about the law of the United States, about the law of the state of Florida, about the rule of law and about our duty. And I am grateful to each of you that participated. And I would leave you with one last thought: If we can accomplish the next two years on issues, for the most part, far less consequential than this, what we accomplished here today, we are going to have a great two years. I thank you very much.

(APPLAUSE)

BOETTCHER: That was Speaker Tom Feeney, the Republican leader of the House, the speaker of the house. The vote again: 79-41, 120 members, all of them voting, 63 of them freshman legislators. This is their first vote. Now, this is the not end. Tomorrow, the Senate takes up the same resolution. We'll go through the same process. And, at that the point, when both the Senate and the House have agreed on this resolution, there will be 25 electors named by a state legislator -- a legislature, Florida's state legislature -- Bobbie.

BATTISTA: All right. Mike, thanks for the update. We will be back in touch, I am sure.
