Snow, Ice Make Travel Treacherous in Northeast

Aired December 14, 2000 - 1:29 p.m. ET

THIS IS A RUSH TRANSCRIPT. THIS COPY MAY NOT BE IN ITS FINAL FORM AND MAY BE UPDATED.

LOU WATERS, CNN ANCHOR: Logan Airport in Boston briefly shut down today while the runways were plowed -- that's not the runway, but they were plowed.

Byron Barnett (ph) of our affiliate WHDH has more from the Boston area.

(BEGIN VIDEOTAPE)

BYRON BARNETT, WHDH REPORTER (voice-over): On I-495 in Chalmsbird (ph), it was slow going all morning long, with traffic inching along at a snail's pace. First snow, then sleet, then rain filled the roads with icy slop.

(on camera): Are you late for work?

UNIDENTIFIED MALE: Oh, big time. I come from Framian (ph), Mass. to Merrimack, New Hampshire of Fidelity. I've been on the road for almost three hours now.

BARNETT (voice-over): The bad weather made driving treacherous throughout the region. In Tuchsbury (ph), a car collided with a school bus. Fortunately, no one was injured.

UNIDENTIFIED FEMALE: I was coming up the street and this fellow came down and he skidded into the bus.

BARNETT (on camera): Oh, boy.

UNIDENTIFIED FEMALE: Yes; and I have three little kids here from the Brooks (ph) School.

BARNETT: What do you think about the driving out here today?

UNIDENTIFIED FEMALE: It's terrible.

BARNETT: Was it pretty nerve-racking out there, driving little kids around this morning?

UNIDENTIFIED FEMALE: Yes, it was. The kids think it's a picnic, but it's not.

BARNETT (voice-over): Off the roads, it was back to winter as well. Time for snow shovelling again and, of course, school closings and delays.

UNIDENTIFIED FEMALE: Ninety-minute delay today.

BARNETT (on camera): So you're out here with the kids, waiting for the school bus.

UNIDENTIFIED FEMALE: Waiting for the school bus; trying to keep the kids dry.
