Special Event

Outgoing First Lady Hillary Clinton Meets with Incoming First Lady Laura Bush

Aired December 18, 2000 - 11:09 a.m. ET

THIS IS A RUSH TRANSCRIPT. THIS COPY MAY NOT BE IN ITS FINAL FORM AND MAY BE UPDATED.

BILL HEMMER, CNN ANCHOR: As we are listening to congressional leaders meet with the president-elect from the White House South Portico, we will see Hillary Clinton standing there, off to the right, waiting for Laura Bush to emerge from that black limousine. This is tradition for the incoming first lady to be greeted by the outgoing first lady. In this case, Hillary Clinton is a member of the Senate in New York.

We do anticipate the two women to sit down for traditional tea today.

QUESTION: What's your best advice for Mrs. Bush?

SEN. ELECT HILLARY RODHAM CLINTON (D-NY), FIRST LADY: We are going to go in and have a visit.

QUESTION: (OFF-MIKE)

LAURA BUSH, FIRST LADY-DESIGNATE: I sort of know it from staying here with President Bush. We have also been here with the Clintons, and they've been to our house for dinners. I have slept in the Lincoln Bedroom.

CLINTON: Thank you all.

HEMMER: We are trying to listen there, trying to catch the comments off-mike there at the White House. Tea for two, in a rather interesting way, Laura Bush will go ahead of her husband, before George W. Bush goes to White House tomorrow for meetings with both Bill Clinton and the vice president, Al Gore.
