Winter Weather Creates Treacherous Situation in Plains States

Aired December 26, 2000 - 4:33 p.m. ET

THIS IS A RUSH TRANSCRIPT. THIS COPY MAY NOT BE IN ITS FINAL FORM AND MAY BE UPDATED.

LOU WATERS, CNN ANCHOR: In Tulsa, Oklahoma, motorists appear to be heeding the warnings and staying off their icy streets and highways. We get more on the situation there from reporter Sean Mossman with CNN affiliate from KOAT.

SEAN MOSSMAN, CNN CORRESPONDENT: Another chilly afternoon here in Tulsa. The rain is falling. It's freezing drizzling and rain. We woke up this morning at about 5 a.m. to about an inch of ice in our highways. We add to this. Freezing rain and sleet. You can see the pellets down below me. That on top of the ice and now the freezing rain has caused hazardous road conditions.

You can see behind me the main loop around downtown Tulsa. Not very many cars at this hour and that is a good thing because the Oklahoma Highway Patrol and the Department of Transportation have been advising people all day to just stay at home. If you're not absolutely essential to your job, stay indoors. Do not venture out.

Luckily, we haven't had very many accidents this morning. We had several accidents, well over 100 yesterday in Tulsa as the first sleet and ice storm came in. But today, people have wised up, it seems, and are just staying home for the day.

Again, rain and snow mixed. All day, all morning continuing through the night. The travel conditions here are very hazardous.

Reporting from Tulsa, I'm Sean Mossman, CNN.
