THIS IS A RUSH TRANSCRIPT. THIS COPY MAY NOT BE IN ITS FINAL FORM AND MAY BE UPDATED.
LOU WATERS, CNN ANCHOR: It's not over yet for shoppers who today are out looking for bargains or returning their Christmas gifts.
CNN's Deborah Feyerick is in the thick of it at a shopping mall in Elizabeth, New Jersey. Deborah, what's going on?
DEBORAH FEYERICK, CNN CORRESPONDENT: Well, that's right. Now, the crowd is very thick -- a lot people looking for bargains, as you can see behind me. This is not exactly what it looked like this morning, but folks are out here. You've got layered discounts, discount upon discount upon discount.
I spoke to the marketing director here at mall. She said she's been talking to several of her vendors and the vendors basically that in fact they're having a good year. That they've actually exceeded expectations. One man saying that whatever he makes this week is really going to be icing on the cake. The big question, of course, is is that the case at all of the rest of the malls or is that just particular to the outlet mall where you already have the huge discounts?
The analysts numbers are not coming out, at least for a little while. We have been speaking to some shoppers, one who ran away, but he was telling us that he had a problem when he went to use one of his gift cards at a big chain store. They just simply would not accept the gift card. They said you've got to use it on another day besides today, and so he was very unhappy.
Other folks we're talking to are having a lot better luck with their exchanges and also with their gift cards. We are seeing shoppers here. Lots of bags. In fact, every other shopper seems to have bag. Many large chain stores so that'll be interesting to see just whether the big chains stores did well or whether the smaller stores had a problem.
Reporting live from Elizabeth, New Jersey, Deborah Feyerick, CNN.
