San Marcos Police Commander Discusses Manhunt for Texas Prison Escapees

Aired January 5, 2001 - 8:03 a.m. ET

THIS IS A RUSH TRANSCRIPT. THIS COPY MAY NOT BE IN ITS FINAL FORM AND MAY BE UPDATED.

CAROL LIN, CNN ANCHOR: So joining us, right now, is Commander Bill Glasgow, from the San Marcos Police Department, for the latest on the investigation.

Commander, I'm sure those pizza box pictures will help, hopefully, in this investigation.

I want to ask you something, though, and let me play devil's advocate, here. You have been getting hundreds of tips and sightings, every day. So why do you give more credibility to the one at the Bank of America?

BILL GLASGOW, SAN MARCOS POLICE DEPARTMENT: Well, I -- the local did -- Texas Department of Public Safety and the statewide folks are the ones getting hundreds of tips. We have not been receiving that much information, here, at our local police department.

So the fact that we're getting information from the DPS folks and the Texas Department of Criminal Justice and, along with the witness statements, we're treating this as a serious sighting and preparing our officers for any confrontation or interaction with these individuals.

LIN: And you say, witnesses. You have two collaborating -- correct me, if I'm wrong, here -- witnesses, inside the bank?

GLASGOW: Well, we have, actually, the one inside the bank, one, outside the bank. They're unrelated and don't even know each other. That information is consistent. And so from that perspective, we're treating the information as serious information.

LIN: Yes. Now, the photos that we've been airing on our air that are going on these Dominos pizza boxes, are you pretty confident that these men still look the way they do in their mug shots?

GLASGOW: I'm not familiar with the particular photos you're talking about. I know that many of the photos that have been distributed are the photos, taken when these particular individuals are -- had reported to the Texas Department of Corrections. It's their intake photos. Their heads had been shaved. It's probable and likely that their hair is longer. We may have some facial hair. And so we're trying to prepare for those contingencies, but I doubt that they're -- have the buzzed head and the shaved head look anymore. LIN: We understand that the FBI is getting some updated photos, indeed. Why do you think they're heading south?

GLASGOW: Well, you know, they originally started in the southern part of the state and then, went up into the Metroplex, the Dallas area and committed the murder of the police officer, up there. And I have no idea what these guys are doing. I don't think any of us really do. It's pretty clear, it doesn't look like they're leaving the state. It doesn't look like they're trying -- originally, in their direction of travel, trying to leave the state, south, into Mexico. So, you know, I don't have an explanation of why they're going the way they are.

LIN: OK. Can you reveal, without compromising your security, how your officers are preparing for what has been described as a potentially violent confrontation?

GLASGOW: Well, we're just -- it's an awareness level for us. It's making sure that our officers, if they have any type of -- when they respond to a call for service that has any inkling of these guys are involved, that we're making sure that multiple officers are going to scenes. Based on the violence used in the murder of the officer in the Dallas area, we are, certainly, are very concerned for the safety of our officers and, you know, the fact is, that these guys are violent and, probably, there's going to be some type of violent interaction again, with them, in the law enforcement. And we're just taking contingencies to notify our SWAT people. They're on standby in our community and if we have the opportunity, of course, we'll have them respond to any scenes.

LIN: Well, all right. Let's hope that, if you do encounter these fugitives that it will not be a violent encounter. Thank you very much, Commander Bill Glasgow, San Marcos Police Department in Texas.
