Two Remaining Texas Fugitives Surrender

Aired January 24, 2001 - 5:56 a.m. ET

THIS IS A RUSH TRANSCRIPT. THIS COPY MAY NOT BE IN ITS FINAL FORM AND MAY BE UPDATED.

LINDA STOUFFER, CNN ANCHOR: You're looking at pictures right now of the two remaining of the Texas fugitives surrendering to police. It happened just more than 10 minutes ago in Colorado Springs, Colorado, after a standoff with police in a hotel in that area that lasted just coming up on six hours.

JASON CARROLL, CNN ANCHOR: And you can see there that the men look drastically different from their pictures. You could see that one of them had dyed their hair blond, their hair is substantially longer than -- than what we saw in some of the pictures. So it's probably easy to understand why some people were just simply unable to recognize many of these men.

Also, you can see there that they both gave themselves up without incident, no shots were fired. Both Donald Newbury and Patrick Murphy Jr. gave statements to a local television reporter from Colorado Springs, Eric Singer, before their surrender where they gave a statement criticizing Texas' penal institution there, saying that they had escaped to prove a point that there was something wrong with the system there.

STOUFFER: We'll let you hear part of the interview a little bit earlier that Patrick Murphy Jr. did with that local journalist. We do have tape of Donald Newbury, what he had to say to the local reporter, too. We are hoping to bring you that tape now -- in fact, we're going to wait a few moments before we're able to bring that to you.

But again, the headline here: Six of the seven escapees are now is custody, the other had committed suicide on Monday -- so it appears this manhunt, this chapter, is over.

CARROLL: Those suspects will be taken to a local police station there for processing and then moved to El Paso.

So what were going to do right now is we're going to take a quick break. We're going to be back with more of our continuing coverage of these two men who have surrendered. Stay with us.
