Ask CNN: Why is There Such a Big Trend for Reality TV Nowadays?

Aired February 1, 2001 - 2:54 p.m. ET

THIS IS A RUSH TRANSCRIPT. THIS COPY MAY NOT BE IN ITS FINAL FORM AND MAY BE UPDATED.

FLAVIO ZACLIS, BRAZIL: My name is Flavio Zaclis from Brazil. And my question is: Why is there such a big trend for reality TV nowadays?

MARK BURNETT, CREATOR, "SURVIVOR": This reality trend is very similar to what's going to happen in dramas and comedies. Each year, 50 pilots are made for dramas and maybe one or two shows make it. That's going to be the same thing in this new type of reality. It's going to be held to the same standards by the American public.

Good shows will always make it. I think "Survivor" created a new trend in this type of reality TV because it's real people and the audience can identify very well with them. And as long as a show has good production values and simple storylines that are compelling, and compelling people, the show can make it. But it doesn't mean to say every reality show, if it's not compelling, not believable, and not a good cast, can make it.

One of the most amazing things about "Survivor" is how the cast members, or at least some of them, are still public figures. I would have never have thought that. I thought they'd get a little bit of fame, maybe their 15 minutes. It seems that some of them are having their 15 months. And I couldn't be happier. I really have high regard for these people.
