Cruise and Kidman Separate; Jennifer Lopez No. 1 in Album Sales and at the Box Office

Aired February 5, 2001 - 2:48 p.m. ET

THIS IS A RUSH TRANSCRIPT. THIS COPY MAY NOT BE IN ITS FINAL FORM AND MAY BE UPDATED.

JOIE CHEN, CNN ANCHOR: Time here for some introductions at this hour. We introduce something that we will be doing every day in this half hour between 2:30 and 3:00 p.m. Eastern every day, and that will be our show report -- showbiz report.

We debut today with a couple of bigger debuts. Here's Laurin Sydney with that -- Laurin.

LAURIN SYDNEY, CNN CORRESPONDENT: Thank you, Joie, and it's a pleasure being with you, and of course, with all of you.

Good afternoon. The marriage of one Hollywood's hottest couples is cooling off. Get ready: Tom Cruise and Nicole Kidman announced today that they have separated after 11 years of marriage. The couple's publicist says that the two have agreed to a -- quote -- "amicable separation" -- end quote -- and blame careers which consistently keep them apart. Cruise and Kidman married in 1990 and have two children.

Meanwhile on TV, a new couple is getting together. Regis Philbin gave fans of his morning talk show a final answer to the question who will be his new co-host.

(BEGIN VIDEO CLIP, "LIVE WITH REGIS")

REGIS PHILBIN, HOST: I'm glad you're here. We had a lovely time for about six months. You know, we tried out a lot of people, including you. You were back I think three different times.

KELLY RIPA, ACTRESS: I was.

PHILBIN: Three different occasions, and I guess it became obvious and evident to everybody that Kelly Ripa should be the one here on a permanent basis.

(APPLAUSE)

(END VIDEO CLIP)

SYDNEY: On Monday's show, actress Kelly Ripa officially became Regis' permanent sidekick on "Live." Ripa has been among the guest hosts sitting in since Kathie Lee Gifford's departure. She will continue to star in the ABC soap "All My Children" while she spends mornings on the talk show.

As "The Wedding Planner," Jennifer Lopez gathered enough dearly beloved movie-goers over the weekend to remain top at the box office. She is also No. 1 at the record store.

Now, if that's not enough to keep her in the public eye, she may be called as a witness in the ongoing trial of her boyfriend, Sean "Puffy" Combs.

Paul Vercammen talked with the singer/actress about her current mastery of mixed media.

(BEGIN VIDEO CLIP, "THE WEDDING PLANNER")

JENNIFER LOPEZ, ACTRESS/SINGER: Where did you learn to dance like this?

(END VIDEO CLIP)

LOPEZ: ... J.Lo.

PAUL VERCAMMEN, CNN CORRESPONDENT (voice-over): Jennifer Lopez has divided and conquered. Her record "J.Lo" debuted at No. 1 with "The Wedding Planner" No. 1 at the box office. That makes Lopez the first artist to simultaneously boast a No. 1 film and No. 1 non- soundtrack record since Soundscan began tracking music sales.

LOPEZ: Actually, the album was supposed to be out in November, but I just took a little more time, you know, getting it right. You know, I really wanted it to be right before put it out. So it just kind of happened in a way where everything came out in the same week, you know. So here we are.

(BEGIN VIDEO CLIP, "THE WEDDING PLANNER")

LOPEZ: I can't help you.

(END VIDEO CLIP)

VERCAMMEN: Lopez eloped to box office with on-screen dance partner Matthew McConaughey.

(on camera): All right. Who led?

LOPEZ: We were both kind of just holding each other up.

(LAUGHTER)

I think more than anything we were helping each other out: not like one person was leading more than the other. We both were struggling through it. It was a tough scene to show with all the dialogue and everything.

VERCAMMEN (voice-over): Lopez says she's speaking more on her own terms on the new record "J.Lo."

LOPEZ: It's a pop album, much like the last one, but with the R&B and Latin kind of music influences on it. It has more my point of view on the record. I told a lot more on this album.

VERCAMMEN: Jennifer Lopez mania will continue with the Academy Awards in March, where she'll be a presenter: Her fourth appearance in the Oscar telecast. It remains to be seen if Lopez will attend with beau Sean Puffy Combs. She won't discuss his legal troubles. Lopez would rather focus on "The Wedding Planer."

LOPEZ: I think it makes a good date movie. It's light, it's funny.

(BEGIN VIDEO CLIP, "THE WEDDING PLANNER")

MCCONAUGHEY: Are you OK? Are you OK?

LOPEZ: You saved my shoe.

(END VIDEO CLIP)

LOPEZ: Take your girl to go see it. She will like you after.

(LAUGHTER)

VERCAMMEN: Lopez has her own fantasy wedding planned in her head.

LOPEZ: I love warm weather and I love the ocean, and I love, you know, just sunshine and stuff like that. So I would want to go some place tropical probably.

VERCAMMEN: Why not? With all this success, "J.Lo" may soon be able to buy an island.

Paul Vercammen, CNN Entertainment News, Hollywood.

(END VIDEOTAPE)

SYDNEY: No wonder she's so popular. We will have more Latin sizzle right her tomorrow in our SHOWBIZ TODAY report. The spicy Gloria Estefan joins me right here live at 2:35 Eastern to talk about her new greatest hits album. So please, won't you join us then?

And that is what SHOWBIZ TODAY reports at this hour. From New York, I'm Laurin Sydney, and now back to Joie in Atlanta.
