THIS IS A RUSH TRANSCRIPT. THIS COPY MAY NOT BE IN ITS FINAL FORM AND MAY BE UPDATED.
NATALIE ALLEN, CNN ANCHOR: Take you now live pictures of O.J. Simpson, after going into court to turn himself in today after a traffic altercation. Let's listen to his lawyer if we can. I'm not sure if we have audio. Let's just check it out and see.
(JOINED IN PROGRESS)
YALE GALANTER, ATTORNEY FOR O.J. SIMPSON: At this time, Mr. Simpson wants me to read the prepared statement again, so I'm going to do that. As per our agreement, he's not going to be answering any questions at this time. Mr. Simpson wishes me to make this statement on his behalf.
Mr. Simpson is extremely thankful for the professionalism shown by the state attorney's office, the Miami-Dade Police Department and the Miami-Dade Corrections Department in allowing him to self- surrender and expediting his swift release from this incarceration.
Mr. Simpson posted a bond about a half hour ago in the amount of $9,000. He was charged with burglary of an occupied conveyance and simple battering.
As you are aware, this is as the result of a road rage misunderstanding that occurred on Dec. the 4th, 2000. Mr. Simpson, as you are also aware, was not the aggressor in that incident. He is prepared to let his lawyers litigate this case through the Miami-Dade court system and is thankful for that opportunity.
He would like to be and continues to be an important part of our community and wishes to assimilate well into it. As a single father, his only goal in life is to provide for his children and his family. He looks forward to fighting these charges, proving his innocence and putting this behind.
Thank you very much.
QUESTION: Mr. Galanter, when did you learn that he would be coming down here from the state attorney's office?
GALANTER: Yesterday afternoon.
QUESTION: And the state attorney notified you yesterday afternoon? QUESTION: (OFF-MIKE)
GALANTER: Yes, there is a 4:00 press conference at my office.
UNIDENTIFIED FEMALE: Thank you very much.
ALLEN: All right, O.J. signing an autograph and mugging for the camera a little behind his attorney. Let's see if he has anything to say.
As you heard his attorney say, he calls this a "misunderstanding," a road rage misunderstanding. He's been charged with simple battery. He claims he is innocent and didn't cause the altercation between a motorist and O.J. Simpson. The motorist claims that O.J. Simpson knocked his sunglasses off when the car approached his car after O.J. Simpson ran a stop sign.
