Pre-Grammy Gala at Clive Davis'

Aired February 20, 2001 - 2:42 p.m. ET

THIS IS A RUSH TRANSCRIPT. THIS COPY MAY NOT BE IN ITS FINAL FORM AND MAY BE UPDATED.

LAURIN SYDNEY, CNN ANCHOR: Turning to the world of music, Grammy fever is gripping Los Angeles. The awards are handed out tomorrow, but the electricity from the party circuit already has the city abuzz. One of the town's hottest tickets is, of course, Clive Davis' annual pre-Grammy gala. Sherri Sylvester is standing by with the legendary producer and one of his up-and-comers.

Sherri, take it away.

SHERRI SYLVESTER, CNN CORRESPONDENT: All right, Clive Davis has worked with some of the biggest names in the business -- of course, Springsteen, Santana, and Streisand along with Whitney Houston -- tonight he will have a lot of big names here at his party.

Thanks for joining us and drop some names for us. Who's going to be here tonight?

CLIVE DAVIS, MUSIC PRODUCER: Well, Wyclef to Stevie Wonder and Mary J. Blige, Dido -- a glittery turnout -- Joni Mitchell, Paul Simon. It really is a night to celebrate music, where all the heads of the motion picture studios, the music studios, and the stars turn out to celebrate music.

SYLVESTER: Along with your newest discovery.

DAVIS: Indeed. Music is special and apart from celebrating the nominees, I will be introducing tonight, to this glittering crowd, a special new artist. You saw when Macy Gray and Lauren Hill came about number of years ago, but tonight, Alicia Keyes will dazzle them.

SYLVESTER: Is there any fear factor for you in playing to this room when you know everybody out here is a very famous face?

ALICIA KEYES, MUSICIAN: Well, I can't say there's any fear. I am very honored -- we are going to have a wonderful time, we are going to have a great time, and I'm just honored to be among so many people I admire.

SYLVESTER: All right, you have agreed to give us a little preview, so play us away.

KEYES: All right, we are headed over here.

(MUSIC, PLAYED BY ALICIA KEYES) SYLVESTER: A star is born.
