Pre-Grammy Party Hottest Ticket in TownAired February 20, 2001 - 4:36 p.m. ET
THIS IS A RUSH TRANSCRIPT. THIS COPY MAY NOT BE IN ITS FINAL FORM AND MAY BE UPDATED.
LAURIN SYDNEY, CNN ANCHOR: Even though I'm in New York, we are counting down, Joie, to the 43rd Annual Grammy Awards, which are now just about 24 hours away. But before the Grammy party begins, music stars party with Clive Davis at his annual pre-Grammy bash.
Sherri Sylvester, who I am very jealous of right now because you are with my Luther, is live in Beverly Hills with a preview -- Sherri.
SHERRI SYLVESTER, CNN CORRESPONDENT: That's right. For 26 years, Clive Davis has hosted the pre-Grammy night party. This is the hottest ticket in town, and he's here with Luther Vandross. They're both joining me now live. Luther, of course, five-time Grammy winner. Thanks a lot guys.
CLIVE DAVIS, FOUNDER, J RECORDS: My pleasure
SYLVESTER: First of all, Clive, can you tell us what makes a great Grammy party?
DAVIS: You celebrate music and all the stars come out and the heads of the record companies and the motion picture companies and it's here in an intimate, exclusive setting. But what we're here to do is just celebrate music, and so great stars of the world such as the man on my left, Luther Vandross and along with Stevie Wonder and Wyclef and Mary J. Blige and Gladys Knight, Angie Stone (ph) and Dido and others will be performing and it's going to be quite a special night.
SYLVESTER: We're also here to celebrate J Records and Luther, you have gone with Clive to J...
LUTHER VANDROSS, MUSICIAN: Yes, I have. I certainly have.
SYLVESTER: ... tell me why.
VANDROSS: Oh, because he and I have known each other many, many years; a few decades, as a matter of fact, and we work together on other artists at Clive's...
DAVIS: He was in the scroll...
VANDROSS: Yes, right. And I always loved Clive's work from afar and always -- can I say always wanted to be on his label? I always wanted to be on his label. That's the truth, and when the opportunity came for us to join together, I just jumped to it, as the phrase goes.
SYLVESTER: You've played for a lot of great crowds. What is it like to play for this party?
VANDROSS: Well, this will be the first time that I've played for one of Clive's Grammy parties. I have attended a few, but I've never actually had the chance to play for one.
This is going to be great. These are all people who are in the industry, and who love and understand the music and there's a bunch of artists on the show and it's going to be a hoot for all of us.
VANDROSS: And you have agreed to give our CNN viewers a preview. So you're going to play for us right now.
SYLVESTER: Thank you very much.
VANDROSS: My pleasure.
DAVIS: Thank you very much.
SYDNEY: Thank you so much, Luther.
