Aired March 17, 2001 - 8:34 a.m. ET

THIS IS A RUSH TRANSCRIPT. THIS COPY MAY NOT BE IN ITS FINAL FORM AND MAY BE UPDATED.

MILES O'BRIEN, CNN ANCHOR: The father of the young suspect in the California school shooting says he feels sympathy and sorrow for the victims.

We get more on the story from CNN's Anne McDermott.

(BEGIN VIDEOTAPE)

ANNE MCDERMOTT, CNN CORRESPONDENT (voice-over): Charles Andy Williams, suspect in the Santana High shootings. Why did he do it? His father can't answer that.

JEFF WILLIAMS, SUSPECT'S FATHER: I am a single father and have raised Andy since birth. I am confused by what happened at Santana High School and I'm scared for my son.

MCDERMOTT: Jeff Williams spoke out publicly for the first time since March 5, the day police and others say Andy Williams fired round after round at his classmates, killing two, wounding 13.

WILLIAMS: I would like to express my sympathy and sorrow to all of those affected by the events of March 5, 2001. Mere words cannot express the remorse I feel for the families.

MCDERMOTT: Andy Williams' attorney said he would challenge the state law that says his client must be tried as an adult.

UNIDENTIFIED ATTORNEY: Andy Williams is a 15-year-old boy.

MCDERMOTT: The boy's aunt also spoke, saying the family supported him, but...

CINDY WEBBER, SUSPECT'S AUNT: We're heartbroken by this event and we do not wish to offer any excuses.

MCDERMOTT: Andy Williams returns to court March 26 for his arrangement.

Anne McDermott, CNN.
