Two Attorneys Charged in California Attack Dog Case

Aired March 27, 2001 - 8:52 p.m. ET

THIS IS A RUSH TRANSCRIPT. THIS COPY MAY NOT BE IN ITS FINAL FORM AND MAY BE UPDATED.

GRETA VAN SUSTEREN, CNN LEGAL ANALYST: We're got to go to another story. There's been a new development in a story that we've been following here on "THE POINT," the San Francisco dog mauling case.

CNN's Rusty Dornin joins us now from San Francisco with the details -- Rusty.

RUSTY DORNIN, CNN CORRESPONDENT: Well, Greta, for the last two weeks, a grand jury in San Francisco has been hearing testimony in the case against two attorneys, Marjorie Knoller and Robert Noel, Who were caretakers for the two dogs that attacked Diane Whipple, a 32-year-old woman who was fatally mauled outside her apartment in January.

Now, what we have just learned is that indictments will be announced shortly, but they have announced that there are warrants for the arrest two of the attorneys, $2 million warrants for Marjorie Knoller and $1 million for Robert Noel.

The interesting thing about that is that the two attorneys are already in custody, having left the courtroom this afternoon after giving testimony and were pulled over for reckless driving on the way, apparently, to Sacramento and they were kept in custody. So, the two attorneys are in custody. They will be arrested and brought back, and we are expecting shortly to hear what charges will be filed against the pair. It's expected either involuntary manslaughter or voluntary manslaughter -- Greta.

VAN SUSTEREN: Rusty, why were they in court this afternoon to begin with?

DORNIN: Well, apparently, Marjorie Knoller was giving her third day of testimony to the grand jury, and apparently, in another bizarre twist in case that has never-ending twists to it, Knoller did have some kind of anxiety attack during the testimony. Apparently. paramedics had brought in a gurney for her, but she was able to walk out by herself.

She told reporters that the testimony had been excruciating, just bringing up the whole afternoon. She was the one who was with Diane Whipple when she was attacked. So, they left courtroom this afternoon and then they were pulled over by police.

VAN SUSTEREN: OK, Rusty Dornin, thank you very much for the latest on that dog mauling case where at least charges are expected very shortly. We'll be right back with THE POINT. Stay with us.
