Calm Restored in Ireland After Racial Rioting

KYRA PHILLIPS, CNN ANCHOR: In Northern Ireland (sic), calm but not peace has finally been restored after two days of racial rioting in the town of Bradford. The violence has left dozens of police and civilians injured. CNN's Diana Muriel has been on the scene.

(BEGIN VIDEOTAPE)

DIANA MURIEL, CNN CORRESPONDENT (voice-over): A night of violence in the northern English city of Bradford Saturday. British police and West Yorkshire called in reinforcements from up to a 100 miles away, to help stamp out the riots that had erupted earlier in the afternoon.

More than 80 police officers were injured in a series of running battles with Asian and white youths, which began after a protest march against the Neo-Nazi organization, the National Front, turned violent.

The fighting, which began in the city's center, left a trail of destruction in its wake. Cars were burnt. Shops and pubs attacked with rioters using petrol bombs, bricks and baseball bats against police.

CHIEF SUPT. STUART HIDE, WEST YORKSHIRE POLICE: Serious disorder is continuing in the Manningham district of Bradford with groups of youths attacking pubs, shops and other commercial premises. Manningham World Labor Club and the BMW Garage in Oak Lane, Manningham have been set on fire.

A number of cars have been stolen. And shops and other premises have been attacked and looted.

MURIEL: Late in the evening, trouble flared in various parts of the city. One of group of youths attacked a BMW dealership, setting fire to the premises and joy riding through the neighborhood.

Local people say there's likely to be more trouble to come.

UNIDENTIFIED MALE: We hope that nothing will happen tomorrow. But the way it's going, it looks like it's going to be, again, some more rioting tomorrow. So...

MURIEL (on-camera): Violence continues to erupt on the streets of Bradford through the night and police are bracing themselves for further disturbances during the day. Diana Muriel, CNN, Bradford, England.
