JIM CLANCY, CNN ANCHOR: we're going to close out this hour. We're going to take you out to Los Angeles where Paul Vercammen is standing by as people there get together to do what they can to have unity, to have courage, and to face the reality that people have got to face in the wake of this tragedy.

(BEGIN VIDEOTAPE)

PAUL VERCAMMEN, CNN CORRESPONDENT: What happened here tonight was raw emotion, pour into the Hollywood Bowl as Wynton Marsalis and his jazz orchestra, combined with the LA Philharmonic, and went and played a very uplifting piece that was extremely appropriate for these tragic times.

UNIDENTIFIED MALE: We're from New York and we, of course, are deeply touched and saddened. But we want to say that our music is about the blues and it's ultimately about swinging and it's about drawing joy out of tragedy and refusing to be beat down. We cannot be beaten down. Thank you.

VERCAMMEN: And many of the concertgoers here said that they thought they needed to get out of the house and get together and be among friends.

UNIDENTIFIED MALE: I think it's important for people to be together. I think that being together people can express their feelings. And we all know what's going on and I think it's -- that things should go on reasonably normally.

VERCAMMEN: And we close here by giving you a rendition of the Star Spangled Banner that was performed by the LA Philharmonic and Wynton Marsalis. And many people here said they felt an urge to sing along.
