CNN SATURDAY MORNING NEWS

"Other Woman": Laci's Husband Lied

Aired January 25, 2003 - 07:03   ET

THIS IS A RUSH TRANSCRIPT. THIS COPY MAY NOT BE IN ITS FINAL FORM AND MAY BE UPDATED.

HEIDI COLLINS, ANCHOR: Our top story this hour, one month to the day since Laci Peterson disappeared, attention turns to her husband, and a marriage now revealed as deeply troubled. First, Laci's family publicly withdrew its support for Scott Peterson. Then another woman reveals why.
CNN's David Mattingly has this report from Modesto, California.

(BEGIN VIDEOTAPE)

DAVID MATTINGLY, CNN CORRESPONDENT: It was a painful moment to watch, Laci Peterson's family struggling through a month's worth of terrible emotion, going before the cameras and appealing directly to whoever may have taken her, and pleading for her safe return.

(voice-over): But the most powerful moment belonged to Laci's older brother, who claimed that Laci's husband, Scott, admitted to having an affair and questioned what else he may be hiding.

BRENT ROCHA, LACI PETERSON'S BROTHER: Since Scott is no longer communicating with anyone in Laci's family, and because we have so many questions that he has not answered, I am not -- no longer supporting him.

MATTINGLY: Then police revealed the girlfriend, 28-year-old Amber Frey, a single mother who claims a romantic relationship started with Scott Peterson one month before Laci's disappearance. Not knowing, she said, he was married, she called police and reported the affair after news of Laci broke.

AMBER FREY, ALLEGED FORMER GIRLFRIEND: I am very sorry for Laci's family. And the cause -- the pain that this has caused them. And I pray for her safe return as well.

MATTINGLY: A spokesman for the Peterson family said a response was not immediately available. And when questioned by reporters, Modesto policy repeatedly emphasized they could not say anything about the details of the case.

(on camera): But when asked directly if they were any closer to solving this mystery and finding Laci Peterson, Modesto Police Chief Roy Wasden said, "I hope so."
