Wake-Up Call: Progress With Iraq?

Aired February 10, 2003 - 06:36   ET

THIS IS A RUSH TRANSCRIPT. THIS COPY MAY NOT BE IN ITS FINAL FORM AND MAY BE UPDATED.

CAROL COSTELLO, CNN ANCHOR: President Bush says any new moves Iraq has made to cooperate are simply -- I'm quoting here -- "not good enough."
With more on that, and other things, we're joined by White House correspondent, Dana Bash, live with this morning's "Wake-Up Call."

I know, Dana, you're getting ready to head out of town with the president, but I want to talk first about this breaking development this morning. France, Germany and Belgium saying they're not quite ready to protect Turkey in the event of a war with Iraq. How will the administration react to this?

DANA BASH, CNN WHITE HOUSE CORRESPONDENT: Good morning, Carol.

Well, the administration, clearly no immediate reaction yet at this early hour. However, Turkey has clearly been one of the places, one of the countries that the U.S. has been working on, trying to get space, trying to allow the U.S. military to use that as a staging area for a long, long time. So, there's no question that they will not take this very well. It's a key place in the region just to Iraq's north, so it's a very important place the U.S. believes, the administration believes, to use.

So, you know, I'm sure that they're going to have some interesting reaction to this news.

COSTELLO: Yes, and, Dana, this is kind of embarrassing, because there is now disunity among NATO members, and that doesn't happen very often.

BASH: Well, that might be true, but you know, keep in mind that the way this is falling in line, it seems to be falling the same way that it's falling at the U.N. Now, the countries are kind of lining up in the same way at NATO as they are at the U.N. So, I don't know that necessarily this will be a big surprise to the U.S. in that sense.

COSTELLO: All right, Dana Bash, I know you're getting ready to leave, so we'll let you go. Thanks for waking up early with DAYBREAK.
