CNN SATURDAY

Scott Peterson in Custody in Stanislaus County Jail

Aired April 19, 2003 - 15:25   ET

THIS IS A RUSH TRANSCRIPT. THIS COPY MAY NOT BE IN ITS FINAL FORM AND MAY BE UPDATED.

JONATHAN KARL, CNN ANCHOR: Investigators in the Laci Peterson case say they were already very close to arresting Scott Peterson in the disappearance of his pregnant wife. Fearing Peterson might flee into Mexico, police arrested him last night, actually before DNA testing proved that the bodies found this week were those of Laci Peterson and her unborn son. Now, Scott Peterson is in custody at the Stanislaus County jail in Modesto, California, and that's where we find Rusty Dornin with the latest. Rusty.
RUSTY DORNIN, CNN CORRESPONDENT: Well, Jonathan, Scott Peterson did not arrive with Modesto police here at the Stanislaus County jail until about midnight last night. And even though it was so late, there was a crowd of about 100 people outside that were jeering when he did arrive. Now if we take a look at the photos taken when he was booked in to jail and one before he had left Modesto, you see a very different looking Scott Peterson. He colored hair, he lost some weight, he grew a goatee. That was one of the reasons police were very concerned in taking him into custody, because they feared he was a flight risk; he was down in San Diego, he was a little bit too close to the border.

Now of course Laci Peterson's family was devastated by the news. They had known and trusted and loved Scott for many years; stood by him at the beginning of the disappearance and of course that the positive identification of Laci and her unborn son, Connor (ph) was just very difficult for the family to take. Now outside Laci and Scott's home here, there's been a shrine growing for the past week; ever since the bodies were actually discovered in San Francisco Bay. Many people coming by just to say they wanted to feel that they, they wanted to show that they care.

UNIDENTIFIED FEMALE: It's just very sad because she's local; everyone in town's been following the case, we talk about it all the time at work. And it's just a major loss for the whole city, for the whole country you know? This baby never got a chance to live.

(END VIDEO CLIP)

DORNIN: Now it looks like Scott Peterson will be arraigned on Monday or Tuesday on double-homicide charges, however the DA says they are not sure whether they are going to be seeking the death penalty in this case. Jonathan.

KARL: All right. Rusty Dornin in Modesto. Thank you very much. TO ORDER A VIDEO OF THIS TRANSCRIPT, PLEASE CALL 800-CNN-NEWS OR USE OUR SECURE ONLINE ORDER FORM LOCATED AT www.fdch.com
