DARYN KAGAN, CNN ANCHOR: Rhode Island has now reported its first probable case of SARS, Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention now reports probable or suspected SARS cases in 38 states. But there has been some progress in slowing the rate of its spread.
Jennifer Coggiola has that story.

JENNIFER COGGIOLA, CNN CORRESPONDENT (voice-over): Two months after the world learned of the first SARS case, some places are beginning to get a handle on the disease. Vietnam is the first country to successfully contain a SARS outbreak. The CDC says travel alerts for Toronto, Canada and Singapore may soon be lifted.

But China, where SARS is believed to have originated, continues to struggle with the virus. Travel warnings remain from the WHO and the Chinese government is taking some drastic measures. Shops and restaurants closed and threats of execution to anyone who violates quarantine rules to spread the killer virus.

In just the latest attempt to protect people across the globe, China has temporarily suspended overseas adoptions, leaving prospective American parents in limbo and children in orphanages.

Jennifer Coggiola, CNN, Atlanta.
