CNN BREAKING NEWS

Israeli Helicopter Gunship Fires Missile at Car in Gaza City

Aired June 12, 2003 - 09:08   ET

THIS IS A RUSH TRANSCRIPT. THIS COPY MAY NOT BE IN ITS FINAL FORM AND MAY BE UPDATED.

DARYN KAGAN, CNN ANCHOR: And once again the breaking news we're following out of Gaza City now. We're getting word of at least one person dead as an Israeli helicopter gunship fires a missile at a car in Gaza City.
Let's bring our Mike Hanna in for more on what we know taking place there -- Mike, hello.

MIKE HANNA, CNN CORRESPONDENT: Well, Daryn, within the last few minutes we've received initial reports of another Israeli operation under way in Gaza. According to Palestinian sources, Israeli missiles have been fired at a vehicle driving in or near Gaza City. In that vehicle, according to the same Palestinian sources, was a member of the armed wing of the Hamas movement.

Israel has pledged that it will continue its operations against Hamas, which, in turn, has threatened to carry out even more bomb attacks against Israeli targets, attacks such as the one in Jerusalem which claimed 16 lives.

Israel has responded with immense vigor against militants of the Hamas movement, some 10 Hamas personnel having been killed in recent days by the Israeli forces.

So an upsurge in the escalation of violence, which, according to reports we're receiving from Gaza, shows no signs of abating -- Daryn.

KAGAN: All right, Mike Hanna in Jerusalem, thank you.

We'll be tracking it and checking back in with you.
