CNN BREAKING NEWS

U.S. Embassy in Monrovia Hit by Mortars

Aired July 21, 2003 - 10:27   ET

THIS IS A RUSH TRANSCRIPT. THIS COPY MAY NOT BE IN ITS FINAL FORM AND MAY BE UPDATED.

LEON HARRIS, CNN ANCHOR: Just want to advice folks that we're getting word here at the CNN Center, we've been able to confirm a report that's been flashing across the wire about the U.S. embassy in Monrovia, Liberia being hit by mortar shells.
If you were with us moments ago, you may have heard our Jeff Koinange, who was there inside the compound, reporting that he had seen heard with his own eyes and ears mortars rounds flying in the air past the embassy and into the ocean right next to it. And the thinking there within that compound was that the embassy itself was being targeted by some of the shelling. And it appears that the embassy now has been hit.

We do not have any more information right now about what may have been hit inside or if there have been any casualties. But we are trying to get -- see if we can get Jeff or someone there back on the phone. And once we do, we'll have more information for you on that.
