CNN SUNDAY MORNING

Interview With The Donnas

Aired August 3, 2003 - 11:23   ET

THIS IS A RUSH TRANSCRIPT. THIS COPY MAY NOT BE IN ITS FINAL FORM AND MAY BE UPDATED.

SEAN CALLEBS, CNN ANCHOR: A little raging rock to get you going this hour of the morning. With an eye on entertainment, we're looking at some girls, all named Donna, who can really rock out. The Donnas are taking it to the street in their new video "Too Bad About Your Girl." The group, sometimes referred to as the female Ramones, is having big success with their CD "Spend the Night." And they are in Atlanta for the Lollapalooza tour. And half the group is here. Lead singer Donna A, and drummer Donna C.
Thanks for being here. Now, you're the real veteran. 24?

DONNA C, DRUMMER, THE DONNAS: We're all 24, actually.

CALLEBS: So what's it like? Lollapalooza, you guys having a lot of fun out there?

DONNA C: Yes, it is a great tour. We've been having so much fun. All the bands are so great. It's really good to be on a tour that's really about the music.

CALLEBS: Jane's Addiction headlining, what are the other bands there.

DONNA A, SINGER, THE DONNAS: Queens of the Stone Age.

DONNA C: Jurassic Five.

DONNA A: Incubus, yes. Everyone is really good. It's amazing, everybody has their own fan base that's really dedicated to them, but then they all stay and watch all the other bands, too.

CALLEBS: What kind of reaction have you gotten?

DONNA A: Pretty good. We play really early in the day. We're still waking up. We're like -- up right now but...

CALLEBS: What time, really, because Lollapalooza goes on for hours, for people who don't go.

DONNA C: We play at 3:15 every day. But more and more people come in as we're playing and stay, and they watch, so it's cool.

CALLEBS: Then you have like a Tab, and you call it an early night?

DONNA C: Totally. DONNA A: Right, right.

CALLEBS: Well, tell us about the band. You guys have been together quite some time.

DONNA A: Ten years.

CALLEBS: Some pet peeves. Do you hate being called a girls band?

DONNA A: A chick band. Yes, it's sort of difficult because the girls technically comes before band.

CALLEBS: And then we have your video, right there, "Too Bad About Your Girl." Was this fun making? Can you see it on the monitor?

DONNA C: Yes, yes, we had a really good time. It was a long day but it was fun. It was a little different than our other videos because we had all the skaters, you know, but it was cool.

DONNA A: A little scary.

DONNA C: A little life threatening.

CALLEBS: Let's talk about some of the influences, because you guys are serious about the music. It's not like you want to get up there and say, we're the Spice Girls, or we're the Bangles, or anything of that nature. You like to rock.

DONNA C: Yes.

DONNA A: Our favorite bands are mostly men.

CALLEBS: AC/DC, New York Dolls, Aerosmith.

DONNA C: Guns N' Roses.

DONNA A: Motley Crue.

DONNA C: Rolling Stones, yes.

CALLEBS: And you bring that to your music. If someone had to say, all right put it in a box, what do you guys play?

DONNA A: It's just rock and roll. Like everybody wants to say punk rock, or there's like, nu metal, and all those weird hybrid names, but ours isn't a hybrid. It's just rock and roll.

CALLEBS: How long has Lollapalooza been going on?

DONNA C: About a month now, and we have another month to go.

CALLEBS: Voice holding out, doing all right?

DONNA A: Yes, it's pretty good. DONNA C: She's doing great.

CALLEBS: What can we see from you guys in the future?

DONNA C: Well, after this tour, we're going to tour Europe, and then we'll probably have to start writing another record.

DONNA A: "Too Bad About Your Girl" gets played a lot on the radio.

CALLEBS: Your new CD, what about that?

DONNA A: That's a good song about role reversals. Usually, like a lot of the bands we love, it's about the guys telling the girls to get down and dirty, and we're kind of flipping it around.

CALLEBS: What's it like now you're in this rarefied air, that you guys have been elevated to rock stars, compared to the early years, and I'm sure you had to put your drum kit in the back of the van and drive around.

DONNA C: Oh, yes. I don't know if we're really rock stars now, but it is different. And we have a bus, and we have some crew, and our first tour was in a van. And we all slept together in the same hotel room together, you know.

DONNA A: Slept in the same bed for years. It was like that.

CALLEBS: OK. Donna C, for the fans, give me your real name?

DONNA C: Tori.

CALLEBS: And Donna A?

DONNA A: Brett.

CALLEBS: You're here in Atlanta, tonight, and go on where?

DONNA C: We go to Florida next.

CALLEBS: OK. Have fun. Rock on.

DONNA C: Thank you.

CALLEBS: Thank you very much.
