CAROL LIN, CNN ANCHOR: Let's go to Iraq right now. Breaking news out of there. Another U.S. soldier has been killed.
CNN's Michael Holmes is standing by in Baghdad, I believe, with the latest from there -- Michael, what more have you learned?
MICHAEL HOLMES, CNN CORRESPONDENT: Hi, Carol.
We don't know a whole lot at the moment, but what we can tell you is that this occurred last evening, late last night, near midnight, in fact, in the northern city of Kirkuk. What we know at this stage is that one U.S. serviceman -- he's from the 73rd Airborne Brigade -- was killed. Two other soldiers were wounded when there was an RPG, rocket propelled grenade, attack on their vehicle.
We can probably assume it was a convoy of some sorts or a patrol and that patrol coming under attack by rocket propelled grenades. One dead, two wounded, and they are from the 73rd Airborne.
Moving along to other news that's been happening here today, a very somber day in Iraq as the funeral gets under way for Akila al- Hasimi. Now, she, of course, was the member of the Iraqi Governing Council who was gunned down outside her home in an ambush last week. Well, she died, of course, yesterday, and is being buried today. Thousands of people turning out on what has been a very emotional day for many Iraqis.
Dr. al-Hasimi had been widely praised by both coalition spokesmen, also by the Governing Council, which called her a martyr and declared three days of mourning.
As many people will know, she was one of only three women on the Governing Council, also was a senior member of the Baathist organization under Saddam Hussein and, as such, represented something of a link between the old and the new, if you like -- Carol.
LIN: All right, thank you very much, Michael Holmes.
We'll be checking back with you for more updates as you get them on this U.S. soldier you just reported on from the 73rd Airborne Brigade who was killed today.
