Aired March 18, 2004 - 13:00   ET

THIS IS A RUSH TRANSCRIPT. THIS COPY MAY NOT BE IN ITS FINAL FORM AND MAY BE UPDATED.

KYRA PHILLIPS, ANCHOR: And this just in to CNN. We are now being told that Pakistani officials believe they have in their hands al Qaeda No. 2, Ayman al Zawahiri. This just coming in, CNN confirming this.
What we know is that troops have surrounded this area on the Afghan border, now saying they believe what we had been reporting as a high value target to possibly be Osama bin Laden's No. 2 man, al Qaeda No. 2 Ayman al Zawahiri.

It was happening in an operation near the Afghan border. It started just a couple days ago, now troops reporting they believe it is him.

Al Zawahiri has been cornered, possibly, according to sources, telling CNN Pakistani troops, in an operation that began just a couple days ago, involving hundreds of troops, Pakistani troops and paramilitary rangers.

We're continuing to follow this story and let you know if, indeed this high value target is al Qaeda's No. 2 man.

MILES O'BRIEN, ANCHOR: Meanwhile, more fresh violence to tell you about in Iraq.

Just within the past 40 minutes or so a series of explosions heard and witnessed all throughout the Iraqi capital. According to our reports out of Baghdad, it appears they were rocket propelled grenades or other rockets that may have caused these explosions.

Unclear what the targets were. We are told, however, that the target was not the so-called Green Zone which is headquarters for U.S. troops in Baghdad.

All this, on a day after that suicide bombing in front of the hotel in that old part of Baghdad which killed seven people, injured upwards of 40 others.

A total of nine civilians were killed in the 24 hours after that attack in several attacks, including one that occurred in Baqubah.

We're watching the situation in Iraq, and we're watching the situation on the Pakistan/Afghanistan border very closely.
