Meet me in Harbour Town
Colored like a giant candy cane, the red- and white-striped Harbour Town Lighthouse is as integral to Hilton Head Island as its soft, white beaches.
The 90-foot lighthouse was built in 1970 through private enterprise under the direction of Sea Pines founder Charles Fraser. The blinking beacon is a low-wattage bulb that can be seen 15 miles away on a clear night. The glowing light serves the Inland Waterway and Calibogue Sound.
A slightly challenging 110 steps lead to the Top of the Lighthouse Shoppe and the observation deck with its calming views across Calibogue Sound, towards Daufuskie Island and the Haig Point Lighthouse, and to the Tybee Island light at Savannah Beach.
The lighthouse is perched at one end of Harbour Town in a town-square-like area, surrounding one of the island's nine marinas. Boaters can dock in one of 90 slips, which hold boats from 30 to 150 feet long.
Harbour Town is located inside the 5,000-acre Sea Pines Plantation. Though Sea Pines is private, a $3 daily guest pass allows you to drive past lush golf greens and busy tennis courts to eat, dine and sightsee in the area.
Each spring, the island buzzes in preparation for two annual sports events. The Harbour Town Golf Links are home to the MCI Classic - The Heritage of Golf, a PGA Tour event in mid-April. The Family Circle Magazine Cup tennis tournament, the longest continually sponsored event on the Women's International Tennis Association Circuit, is played at the Sea Pines Racquet Club in late March or early April.
