Finding a place in the sun
Hilton Head Island takes prides in its status as a model resort community. However, the barrier island's two newest vacation spots have taken a different approach from their resort predecessors.
Main Street Inn
With a commitment to service and pampering, the privately owned Main Street
Inn debuted as a getaway in June 1996. The black-green-shuttered, stucco exterior is patterned after the grand homes of antebellum Charleston, South Carolina. Wrought iron balconies and a European country garden emulate the spirit of a Low Country mansion.
This escape shuns cookie-cutter resort life with its peaceful, wooded setting near quaint Main Street Village. The 34-room inn has its own pool and is within an easy drive to the beach.
Inside, imported linens, feather-filled duvets and marble baths surround guests in luxury. For added romance, four courtyard king rooms indulge with tucked-away, private, walled gardens and oversized whirlpool baths.
Disney's Hilton Head Island Resort
Disney, the family-oriented master planner, is spreading its magical spirit throughout another southern U.S. paradise. While its resort is massive and dotted by golf greens and tennis courts like the island's other big resorts, Disney offers more themed, family-oriented activities.
Secluded on an isle overlooking Broad Creek, Disney's Hilton Head Island Resort at Shelter Cove is a 15-acre Low Country-style retreat. Using Disney's signature whimsical charms, the resort even has a fish mascot named Murggie, symbolizing "the one that always gets away."
Families can casually gather at the relaxed Live Oak Lodge, or hop ashuttle to the oceanside Surfman's Station beach house.
Evening campfires, nature walks, sunset socials and star-gazing programs are included in the villa rental price.
For an additional charge, guests have access to horseback rides, sunset or dolphin cruises and boat expeditions to nearby Savannah, Georgia.
