Edisto's "exterior" decorator
Each time you pass "Tree," you can see signs of the tree decorator's handiwork. No one knows who "she" is -- or at least they're not telling, except to say that she is a local with a penchant for festooning a thin, dead tree that pokes up from the marsh on the right as you pass into Edisto. The tree greets vacationers with simple messages. "Make Memories" was a recent theme, featuring deflated beach balls, liquor bottles, fishing lures and a lone flip flop flung over the puny limbs of "Tree." The mysterious Tree lady has become a local legend. "I heard she had retired," says Chamber of Commerce Director Bob Craig. "But as I drove past there last week, I noticed a lawn chair swinging from the branches. Yep, she's still doing it."
