In a pickle on the train
I have just left Davos and am now on my way to Paris. The Swiss trains are very good and reliable (well, they would be) but a warning -- I don't advise buying the cheese sandwich from the trolley. A brittle, granary baguette with a slice of cheese and -- worst of all -- a pickled cucumber slice.
There must be someone who likes pickled cucumbers -- just not me! I feel quite queasy with the very taste. In Paris tonight, and enroute to LAX tomorrow. I had to buy a new ticket because my plans changed, so ditched the original ticket (cheapie, so no refund!) See my blog entry, "Fare's Fair," below. I am going via London -- cheaper than if I'd bought the ticket from London itself. Let's hope Swiss International Airlines feel the same way about pickled cucumbers!
Yes the food isn't that great but least the trains do go and go well!! Sur you had a greatand scenic journey with the much snow around.
Thanks for a great few days of very imformative debate in Davos. Roll on 2008. As always great to see you on the box
Spot on with the pickled cucumber! When I moved here I had the exact same feeling. However, since they appear on EVERY sandwich you will ever buy in Switzerland I've gotten used to them. So much that I even buy jars of them now...guess I'm going native :)
As a frequent visitor to Switzerland, I love the trains! They are clean, fast and if you take the Intercity Neige Trains, they are among the most quiet and luxurious in the world. Yes, I've always found those darn pickles in salami and roast beef sandwiches, served on the train over the years. I suggest taking the French TGV (165-185 MPH) for just for the thrill of it! I just wish we had such excellent services in Los Angeles, where everyone is stuck using cars in horrible traffic. We should learn from the Swiss and the French. As far as the pickles go, they're okay.
