End of a trip
And so I have arrived home after six weeks on the road. A trip that has taken me to North America, South East Asia, India, Europe and back again. The mileage is somewhere around 58,000 and I have been keeping close track to make sure those miles are credited.

I have been through Changi Airport in Singapore at least three times, and I can easily see why it has won Business Traveller magazine's best airport award 20-odd times. To be sure HKIA is good, SYD is well managed, MUC is clean and efficient, but for my book, Changi in SIN just ticks all the right boxes.

From a decent smoking lounge (there are still some of us who like a quick drag before we fly), to the boiled sweets at immigration, this is one airport that is run with the passengers in mind. And not like the old joke: it would be a fine airport if it wasn’t for those pesky planes...

In East Timor I saw at first hand the work being done by the United Nations integrated team (you can see that in this month’s Quest for Peace). In Sydney of course it was the A380. Tokyo was Business Traveller, Japan Now! and so on.

I also enclose a picture that just about sums up why I love to travel. I took it a few hours ago as my Lufthansa plane made its way back from Delhi to Munich. We were over Afghanistan and I took the picture from the window of the A340-600. (By the way I saw the downstairs toilets on the LH A340-600 in economy. Interesting! First time I have seen airlines building into the hold for passenger use. So the 747 and A380 aren’t the only planes with stairs!)

This picture isn’t exceptional. It’s not even remarkable. It’s simply our world as I flew overhead. And for the chance to have seen it while enjoying the superb modern technology in the air (the plane, not the toilets), I am grateful.

This week takes me to Cairo. It will be my first trip to Egypt. Can you believe that? I am attending a conference. Watch me slip out and see the Pyramids. This is why we travel.

Hello Richard,

Wonderful reports about the Tokyo Ginza Peninsula and the connections through SIN. I'm curious, do you really think the connection experience through SIN is as good or better than HKG (aka: HKIA)? Assuming you fly Lufthansa and Singapore Airlines (SQ) this time, members of Star Alliance, would using your test with the One World Alliance through HKG be the same or better? Now I know British Airways (BA) is the anomaly in that system, but trying Cathay Pacific (CX) using their First Class Lounge (The Wing or The Pier) be to your liking as a connection experience? I ask because I'm all One World due to the CX inclusion, making HKG just my perfect rest stop whether for a connection or an extended stay in the economic free zone of Hong Kong and Macau. But then again, members of Skyteam delight in Dubai, Star Allaince delight in SIN, and One World delight in HKG. I guess we all have our connections. ;)

Richard, you have an interresting life, no one can say different. But with such an article I imagine that you don't go often at home... What about your family?
Dear Richard,
I do hope they will post my comment and most of all I hope you will find 1 minute to read it( so I'll be brief). I am writting you from Romania and I fear that you have never been here...But I can assure you that through CNN you come into a lot of Romanian homes and make our life much more interesting! I've been watching you for the last, I guess, two years....with a lot of enjoyment!!!You always give me reasons to switch on the computer and search for more information regarding places you present us; I think your message is always straight to the point and makes us more aware about the Big World of which we are part of. I also travel a lot for my business but I will watch your shows as long as you'll make them , you can count on me!!!have a good trip! Always! Luisa/Bucharest/Romania
Hello Q,

Completely agree with you on Changi but I would suggest you have a look at Dubai International Airport. It's pretty darn good. Also, wait and see the new airport they are building in Dubai (beyond the Jabal Ali Free Zone).

The new airport will, by far, be the largest airport on the platet. Yes... it's larger than Heathrow both in size and passenger capacity. Perhaps you could do a special report on the new mega-structure and Emirates Airlines plans.

Hello Richard,

Great picture! I recently flew over the same part of the earth as you did and couldn't peel my eyes away from the window for quite some time.

Love reading your stories! Keep up the great work. Let me know when you decide to retire...
try the Maria Tereza Airport in Tirana/Albania once, I am looking forward your opinion curiously (:
I love you blog. You get it-why we travel. I personally don't understand why everyone hasn't gotten their passport and hopped on the next plane to somewhere but I love stories from people who do. The picture of Afghanistan is perfect. I have a similar photo that exists only in my memory-flying over the Bering Strait on the way to Seoul. The water and land were frozen and almost indistinguishable, but still alive and wonderful. Concerning toilets, I have a collection of photos of "Toilets I Have Known and Loved". Keep going and be safe.
