PHILADELPHIA, Pennsylvania (CNN) -- Using private donations, Philadelphia reopened the historic Liberty Bell and other national landmarks Saturday which have been closed since the partial federal shutdown began on December 16.

The city-sponsored reprieve is possible because private donors have agreed to cover the $1,670-a-day expense of hiring a small National Park Service staff at the Liberty Bell Pavilion, Independence Hall, Congress Hall and the City Tavern.

Thefunding is expected to last through Wednesday, and Philadelphia's Mayor Ed Rendell has promised that more cash will be available if the budget impasse is not resolved by that time.
