NEW YORK (CNN) -- Singer Michael Jackson's collapse on stage during a rehearsal at the Beacon Theater in New York Wednesday might have been caused by an irregular heartbeat and dehydration, officials at Beth Israel North Hospital said Thursday. He remained in serious but stable condition in the hospital's intensive care unit Thursday evening.

Officials said Jackson, 37, will require several days of critical care monitoring and treatment for gastro-intestinal inflammation, dehydration, and kidney and liver irregularities.

A hospital statement said Jackson's fainting spell Wednesday may have been caused by cardiac arrhythmia, a condition involving irregular heartbeat.

The singer fainted while rehearsing for a Home Box Office concert scheduled this weekend. The concert has been postponed.

Jackson has been visited by his wife, Lisa Marie Presley, his mother Katherine and his sisters Janet and Rebbie.

"We expect that Mr. Jackson will require several more days of observation and treatment in the hospital," officials said.

Future plans for a Michael Jackson concert are under discussion, HBO said.
