Americans confident Olympic park bomber will be caughtJuly 30, 1996Web posted at: 9:00 a.m. EDT (CNN) -- A majority of the public is confident that federal law enforcement agencies will catch those responsible for the bombing at the Atlanta Olympics, according to the latest CNN/USA Today/Gallup poll.
Most Americans say they are not worried that they or someone in their family will become a victim of a terrorist attack similar to the bombing in Centennial Park.
On both of those measures, public sentiment today is almost identical to what it was in the immediate aftermath of the Oklahoma City bombing in April 1995. If they had tickets to Olympic events in Atlanta, most Americans would still attend those events even after the bombing. Only a handful would cancel their plans if they were in Atlanta.
Most of the public think that the U.S. should not make radical changes in everyday life in this country to prevent terrorism, because it would give terrorists the reaction they are seeking. A minority says that the U.S. should make those radical changes if that is what is needed to prevent terrorist attacks in the future.
The poll is based on telephone interviews conducted with 649 adults Monday evening.
